La presidenta de la Comisión senatorial de Salud, Bienestar Social y Asuntos de la Mujer, Lucy Arce, recomendó ayer al Departamento de Educación (DE) identificar e implantar modelos de intervención adecuados para atender a los niños y niñas con autismo.
Arce hizo el señalamiento en una conferencia de prensa en la que presentó los hallazgos y recomendaciones recogidos en el Cuarto Simposio de Autismo, celebrado el viernes en Ponce, y en la que estuvo acompañada por miembros de la organización sin fines de lucro, Sunrise Community, Inc.
“Tenemos que educarnos para desarrollar a nuestros hijos al máximo, tenemos que darles las herramientas necesarias para que puedan realizarse en todas las etapas de su vida. Por eso, resulta primordial una intervención temprana, lo que mejora, sin duda alguna, el funcionamiento de los niños a largo plazo y la capacidad de los padres para atenderlos”, explicó.
La Senadora insistió en que resulta apremiante que el DE también adiestre a los maestros de nivel preescolar para identificar posibles deficiencias en el desarrollo.
Añadió que “aquellos problemas de la conducta y comunicación que interfieren con el aprendizaje, a veces requieren la asistencia de un profesional que tenga conocimientos en el campo del autismo, quien desarrolla y ayuda a implantar un plan que pueda llevarse a cabo en el hogar y en la escuela”.
Arce mencionó, además, la necesidad urgente de programas para adultos mayores de 22 años, ya que la Ley actual sólo obliga al Estado a ofrecer los servicios hasta los 21 años.
“Identificamos también la demanda por el diseño y la implantación de programas respiro para los que padecen esta condición y la población en general... También el diseño y la implantación de más y mejores programas de vida independiente”, detalló la legisladora en una comunicación escrita.
